Free Study Japanese is a volunteer-based organization dedicated to providing free, one-on-one Japanese language lessons to learners of all backgrounds. Whether you’re just beginning or have never studied Japanese before, we’re here to support you every step of the way.
Because our lessons are one-on-one, you’ll have more chances to speak, ask questions, and get direct feedback from your teacher.
New to Hiragana? No problem! We’ll guide you step by step in reading and writing Hiragana, so you can start reading it confidently in your textbooks.
We will teach you not only Japanese words and grammar, but also how to use them in real-life conversations.

This program is truly special. Not only am I improving my Japanese, but I’m also gaining a deeper understanding of Japanese culture. The lessons feel very personal and interactive, and my teacher always tailors the content to my level and interests. I’ve learned so much more than I ever did with textbooks alone.

Having one-on-one lessons with a Japanese university student has completely changed the way I learn. The classes are focused on real conversation, which has helped me become more confident in speaking. Since the teacher is a student too, the atmosphere is relaxed and friendly, making it easier to learn naturally.
I truly enjoy every lesson. My teacher not only helps me improve my Japanese but also shares a lot about daily life and culture in Japan. It feels more like talking to a friend than a formal class. Thanks to this program, I’m much more motivated and confident in my language learning journey.
